Governor Tom Wolf and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Secretary Leslie S. Richards today highlighted transportation investments as PennDOT held an event outlining the anticipated 626 roadway miles that will be rehabilitated, reconstructed or resurfaced, and 83 bridges that will be improved this year in the six-county northeast region.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced that teams of students from Dallas High School and East Stroudsburg High School North have tied as PennDOT District 4 winners for its inaugural Innovations Challenge.

With numerous potholes appearing on area roadways following a winter and early spring with drastic temperature swings, PennDOT’s District 4 region is launching an intensive pothole-repair effort on state-owned roads in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

From Wednesday evening at 8 PM until Monday morning at 6 AM, the Central Scranton Expressway will be closed in both directions between Interstate 81 and SR 11 (Pittston Avenue) in the City of Scranton. Crews will begin the removal of the old Harrison Avenue Bridge directly over the expressway, and for safety reason, the expressway will be closed. The new Harrison Avenue Bridge will remain open during this time. The posted detour for vehicles will be River Street (northbound) or Moosic Street (southbound). Trucks will utilize Davis Street.

The North ScrantonExpressway (Rt 11 South) inbound to Scranton is closed from Keyser Avenue to Main Avenue due to a crash. Motorists are detouring at the Keyser Ave Off Ramp. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes when traveling in the area.

Due to the severity of the winter storm, PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit on I-81 in Lackawanna and Susquehanna Counties. PennDOT is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel but those who must head out will see speeds reduced to 45 mph on the Interstate 81 north and south bound from Exit 188 (Dunmore, Lackawanna County) to the New York border in Susquehanna County.

Construction for the Route 191 (Hancock Highway) bridge, spanning an unnamed tributary to Big Brook Creek in Oregon Township, Wayne County, is scheduled to begin as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s (PennDOT) Rapid Bridge Replacement Project.
