Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on the schedule for its Atherton Street (Route 3014) project that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College. While the contractor will not be working on Friday, April 12, or Saturday, April 13, to minimize traffic impacts for those attending the Penn State Blue-White, drivers traveling through the work zone can expect the following the remainder of next week. 

From Monday, April 8, through Thursday, April 11, drivers will encounter flaggers in the roadway between West Irvin Avenue and Center Lane. Two crews will continue roadway reconstruction and preparation work for pouring concrete in this location. Another crew will pour concrete curbing and sidewalk, while a third will place conduit and junction boxes for fiber optic cable. PennDOT anticipates a paving crew will place new asphalt in this stretch on Thursday, April 11. 

The contractor will implement a pedestrian detour while this work takes place. This detour will be fluid, and the contractor will adjust it as crews progress through the work zone. PennDOT urges pedestrians to use the detour and avoid walking through the construction zone as it puts them at risk. 

PennDOT expects the current traffic pattern to be in place until early June while the contractor completes drainage improvements through the work zone. 

PennDOT urges motorists to pay attention to work zone and directional signage to enhance safety and keep traffic moving efficiently. Message boards alerting motorists to the construction zone and changing traffic patterns remain in place.

Overall work on the project includes roadway reconstruction, drainage improvements that include pipes and inlets, water and sewer lines, concrete curbing, sidewalks and detectable warning surfaces, pavement markings, traffic signals and supports, and miscellaneous items. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $30.7 million project. PennDOT anticipates the contractor completing the project in the fall of 2024, but all work is weather and schedule dependent. 

PennDOT reminds motorists that intermittent traffic stops are possible for short periods during work activities and urges drivers to use caution when traveling through the work zone. PennDOT also reminds drivers not to follow construction equipment into the closed lane and to use both lanes to the merge point to minimize traffic back-ups and shorten travel delays when approaching the work zone.
