PennDOT Announces Winners of ‘Paint the Plow’ Contest

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is pleased to honor the Venango County regional winners of the “Paint the Plow” safety outreach contest which promotes winter driving safety and fosters appreciation for high school art programs.

Venango Catholic High School won the “Fan Favorite” award, which was determined by online voting, with 572 total submitted votes. The plow depicts a Viking (school mascot) and text referring to the contest’s theme.

A new voting format for the “Fan Favorite” was introduced for the 2019 “Paint the Plow” program. Members of the public picked their favorite plows through a survey linked on the PennDOT website. In connection with the Venango County contest, a total of 1,284 votes were collected during the weeklong voting process.

The winner of the “Judges’ Pick” award was Rocky Grove High School. Rocky Grove’s plow depicted a car crash scene and text referring to the contest’s theme. The “Judges’ Pick” was determined through voting by PennDOT representatives from the Venango County Maintenance Office.

During the winter weather season, the blades, as well as those painted by Franklin and Oil City  high schools and Venango Technology Center students, will be used to maintain Venango County state-owned roadways.

Members of the public can view photos of the painted plow blades online at by clicking on the “Paint the Plow” icon. Pictures of each plow are posted.

“Paint the Plow” is a joint effort of PennDOT and area high schools. Students are invited to paint a plow blade with an original design based on a provided theme. The 2019 statewide theme was “Don’t Rush in Ice and Slush.” It was chosen to draw attention to the need for motorists to give themselves ample time for travel during wintry weather in order to arrive safely to their destination.

Voting for plows submitted by Warren and Forest county students is currently online at
