​National Bike Month

Each May, PennDOT participates in National Bike Month,  a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try. The celebration is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists.

2019 Events

Below is a list of events in the Harrisburg area and statewide to celebrate National Bike Month, as well as Bike to Work Week (May 13-17) and Bike to Work Day (May 17).


May 9

  • Spoke N Gear Expo — Soldiers' and Sailors' Grove — 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
    • Bicycle vendors, enthusiasts, and advocates will gather to share their messages about bicycling in PA. The expo is presented by PennDOT, as well as the departments of Conservation and Natural Resources, Environmental Protection, and Health. This is a great time to check out new gear, how to improve your ride, and the many interesting and exciting opportunities and options for biking in PA. In the event of rain, the expo will be moved into the Keystone Building.

May 13

  • Executive Bike Ride Around Harrisburg — By Invitation Only — 9 a.m. (In the event of steady rain, the ride will be canceled.)
  • National Bike Month Press Event — Capitol Steps — 10 a.m.
    • A press event highlighting National Bike Month, with remarks from PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn, State Rep. Hon. David Maloney, and Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse. In the event of rain, the press event will be held in the East Wing of the Capitol.

May 15

  • Capitol Area Ride of Silence — 6:30-8 p.m.
    • In 2018, 18 cyclists lost their lives doing something they loved — riding a bike in Pennsylvania. This ride is to commemorate their lives. Learn more about this year's ride, as well as other ride locations, at Ride of Silence.

May 30

  • Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Open House Meeting — Various Locations — 4-6 p.m.
    • This meeting is to present the vision, themes, objectives, and draft recommendations for PennDOT's Statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan for review and comment. The meeting will be held in Harrisburg and presented via webcast to 10 PennDOT Engineering District Offices.
