​Public Meeting and Plans Display for the State Route-PA 56 (Johnstown Expressway) Exit and Entrance Ramp Rehabilitation Project

 The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is presently developing plans for the state route-PA 56 (Johnstown Expressway), Widman Street to Walters Avenue Project. Beginning in April 2024, temporary exit and entrance ramp detours and periodic lane closures will be in place at several locations.

 The project is located in Richland and Stoneycreek Townships and the City of Johnstown, Cambria County and will involve the rehabilitation of the traveled roadway, replacing and upgrading of existing guiderail and drainage systems and preservation of four structures. General contractor selection will occur in January 2024. Work will begin in Spring and conclude around November 2024.

 The first detour will include a five (5) day closure of PA 56 Johnstown Expressway exit and entrance ramps for US 219 northbound lanes, followed by a four (4) day detour for US 219 southbound lanes as the project progresses. The Walters Avenue, Widman Street and Bedford Street exits will temporarily be closed as the project progresses to each location. The public will be notified prior to each closure.

 During construction, current plans are for traffic to use a detour to allow the contractor full access to portions of the roadway. Links below include enclosures showing the location of the project and planned detour route.

Rehabilitation process

The project will use a break-and-seat process in which the existing surface of the road is broken, removed and ground into smaller pieces that are mixed with new bituminous surface and reintroduced for additional strength. Links below include rehabilitation descriptions.

Public Meeting and Plans Display for the Route 160 Superstructure Replacement Projects

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is developing plans for the Route 160 (Forest Hills Drive) over Otto Run and Route 160 (Mill Road) over South Fork Little Conemaugh River Superstructure Replacement Projects.

One part of the project, carrying Route 160 (Forest Hills Drive) over Otto Run is located in Adams Township, Cambria County, PA, and will include removal of the existing bridge superstructure (barriers, sidewalk, deck, and beams). It will be replaced with a new superstructure with minimal roadway approach work. During construction, current plans are for traffic to use a detour to allow the contractor full access to the bridge.

A second part of the project, carrying Route 160 (Mill Road) over the South Fork of the Little Conemaugh River is located in Croyle Township, Cambria County, PA, and will include removal of the existing bridge superstructure (barriers, sidewalk, deck, and beams). It will be replaced with a new superstructure with minimal roadway approach work. During construction, current plans are for traffic to use a detour to allow the contractor full access to the bridge.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide the public an opportunity to review and comment on the proposed project. Representatives from PennDOT will be available to answer questions and receive comments regarding the project. The comments of all individuals, groups or organizations are welcome. Anyone with knowledge of historic resources in the project area should attend the meeting.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Michael Fire Hall (also known as Adams Twp Vol Fire Co No 2), 849 Locust Street, St. Michael, PA 15951.
