Project Overview

The purpose of this project is to increase the operational efficiency of the State Route (S.R.) 6 and S.R. 187 intersection while enhancing safety for all users, including vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists.  The project area includes the intersection of Route 187 and Route 1029 (Lake Road) north of Route 6 and the Route 187 railroad crossing south of Route 6.

The intersection was studied as part of the Central Bradford County Traffic Study (2012) and the Wysox Intersection Improvement Study (2018).  These studies collected and analyzed safety and traffic data and identified opportunities to improve the intersection; see the Improvement Opportunities document in the Resources section at right.

Grade-crossing impacts on the intersection

  • PennDOT has no jurisdiction over railroad crossings on public highways.
  • The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has exclusive jurisdiction over public railroad crossings in Pennsylvania.

We are aware of the impact of the nearby railroad grade crossing on both the existing and proposed intersections.  An extended blockage of the grade crossing will adversely affect the performance of the intersection in any configuration.

While roundabouts generally provide safety advantages when compared to signalized intersections, site-specific factors must be evaluated and sound engineering judgement must be applied.  At the Wysox Township location,  lengthy closures of the adjacent grade crossing are better mitigated by a signalized intersection.

A signalized intersection best addresses the project's purpose and need.

Pending completion of environmental clearance and design activities, construction is expected to begin in 2026 and conclude by Fall 2027.  All impacted roads will remain open during construction.
