Statement on PennDOT's response to COVID-19

COVID-19 has led each of us – both as people and as organizations – to  take unprecedented measures and precautions. As per Governor Wolf's directive,  every action we have taken is aimed at mitigating the virus's spread in an effort to protect citizens, employees, and business partners alike. We would rather err on the side of caution and adjust as needed than wish we had taken certain measures.

Here is an update on where we stand:

  • Following a precautionary closure of all rest areas we have opened some amenities at 13 along critical routes most used by trucks;
  • We stopped construction projects to quickly minimize exposure for both PennDOT and private-sector employees. We are actively working closely with our industry partners to find innovative, collaborative, and safe solutions for how these activities can eventually resume with safety at the forefront.
  • At each stage of our closure of driver and vehicle in-person services, we have extended deadlines where possible and ensured that many common services remain available  online.
  • We've been communicating closely with and supporting our transit partners as they navigate adjusting schedules and services.

This is a challenging time that has called for quick, decisive action with the ultimate goal of mitigating COVID-19's spread. We understand the impacts and frustration that results from some of our actions. Please know that we are constantly evaluating and discussing how we are moving forward , and will continue to publicly convey decisions that impact the public. We appreciate your patience and strongly urge you to follow federal and state guidance to not travel unless you must, and to take every personal precaution to tackle this challenge. We are all in this together.

Acting PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian
