4 bridges were repaired, replaced, or preserved by PennDOT or industry forces through March 2024. 10.7 miles of roadway were improved by department or partner crews through March 2024. This includes 6.16 miles of paving. See projects happening or planned near you at PennDOT's Project Website.
From January through March 2024, two construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed in the district through PennDOT's private-sector partners.

Interstate 78 Reconstruction
Reconstruction of I-78 from approximately 5.9 miles east of Exit 30 (Hamburg) to the Berks-Lehigh County line (just west of Exit 45/PA 863) in Greenwich and Maxatawny townships.
Work includes reconstruction of existing 4 lanes (2 east and 2 west), drainage system improvements, guide rail, fencing, landscaping, message sign boards, signing, delineators and pavement markings.
Also, replacement of three dual single-span pre-stressed concrete Bulb-Tee Bridges, one single-span pre-stressed concrete Bulb-Tee Bridge, and two single-span pre-stressed concrete spread box beam bridges. The project also includes adding a third lane (“truck climbing laneâ€Â) eastbound and westbound on the hill just east of PA 737.

More About the Interstate 78 Reconstruction ProjectU.S. 222 Intersections Project
This project will improve the intersections of U.S. 222 and Route 73, U.S. 222 and Genesis Drive, and U.S. 222 and Schaeffer Road in Maidencreek Township, Berks County.
Replace signalized intersection of U.S. 222/Genesis Drive with a modern roundabout, the addition of a roundabout at U.S. 222/Schaeffer Road, widening of the U.S. 222/Route 73 intersection with turn lanes and upgraded signalization, and widening U.S. 222 in the project area to add an additional travel lane northbound and southbound.

More About the U.S. 222 Intersections ProjectRoute 248 Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation of PA 248 (POW/MIA Remembrance Highway) in Carbon County between US 209 and the Northampton County line.
Work on the project includes upgrading rock fence, upgrading median barrier, concrete patching, concrete joint rehabilitation, milling and paving, upgrading shoulders and guiderail new pavement markings and other miscellaneous items. The project also includes rehabilitating interchange ramps on this section of PA 248.
The project began in August and is expected to be completed in June 2022.
